The Royal Dutch Mint is reviving one of the most iconic Dutch coin designs from the last 500 years. Known as the lion daalder, the Netherlands Lion Dollar design was first issued by the Province of Holland in 1575. That original coin was available as a trade coin that reached ports around the world, from the Americas and Asia to Africa and Australia. Right now, that design is revived on the 2018 1 oz Netherlands Silver Lion Dollar Coin available to purchase from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Royal Dutch Mint introduced the Netherlands Lion Dollar coins in 2017 as a restrike of the famed lion daalder. The coin first appeared with the designs on these gold and silver bullion options in 1617 from the Utrecht Mint and was reissued in 2017 to mark the 400th anniversary of the design.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Netherlands Silver Lion Dollar Coin is the image of an Armored Knighted with a Lion Shield. The rampant lion shield featured on this face below the knight is part of the official Dutch coat of arms and is also featured on the Belgian coat of arms.
The reverse of the 2018 Netherlands Silver Lion Dollar Coin includes the image of the rampant lion. This heraldic lion of the Netherlands is the same found on the shield on the obverse in a larger size. The coin has an engraving of the motto of the United Provinces of Holland, which translates to English as “Who trusts in the Lord is not moved.”
The Royal Dutch Mint is today based in Utrecht, the site of the first recognized Dutch Mint which opened in 1567. Since 1807, the Royal Dutch Mint has been the sole sovereign mint for the coining of Dutch coinage.
