Montserrat and Ireland are separated by thousands of miles of ocean and found in completely different climates of the world, yet the two have a similar appearance that led to the nickname used for Montserrat. Ireland’s lush and beautiful coastline long ago earned it the nickname the Emerald Isle. Montserrat has many similar features when viewed from the ocean and quickly became known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Montserrat Silver Emerald Isle of the Caribbean Coin is the depiction of the British Union flag in the upper-left field of the design set. To the lower-right field, you’ll find the coat of arms for Montserrat which includes a depiction of Erin, the female personification of Ireland, holding a harp.
Montserrat and Ireland might seem like strange bedfellows, but the British Overseas Territory actually has deep roots with the nation of Ireland. Many of its inhabitants have Irish ancestry dating back to the 1632 arrival of prisoners, indentured servants, forced laborers, and opposition soldiers hailing from Ireland.
The obverse of all 2018 Montserrat Silver Emerald Isle of the Caribbean Coins features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in the fourth-generation effigy from the Royal Mint which was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
