Trafalgar Square is located in the City of Westminster within Central London and was built around an area formerly known as Charing Cross. The square takes its name from the Battle of Trafalgar that took place off the coast of Cape Trafalgar, Spain on 21 October 1805. In this naval battle, the British Royal Navy emerged victorious over the forces of France and Spain during the Napoleonic Wars.
Today, Trafalgar Square is an iconic public gathering place in the city of London and an ideal addition to the Landmarks of Britain collection. Trafalgar Square sees countless Britons pass through its space each day and was once famous for its feral pigeons until their removal in the 21st century.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz British Trafalgar Square Silver Coin is a view of Nelson’s column in the background which is guarded by four bronze lions at its base in real life.
