In total, all 10 designs in the Queen’s Beast Collection reflect the 10 wood-carved statues that were present at the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II. The ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey in 1953 and during the coronation, Elizabeth II was surrounded by these 10 statues, each one reflecting a different animal vital to the heraldry of Britain, the United Kingdom, and the royal family.
All 2018 1 oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Unicorn Coins in this listing are considered near-perfect specimens by the NGC. Coins with a Mint State 69 grade feature full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines found only outside the primary focal points of the design field.
The Unicorn of Scotland features as the fourth design in the bullion series of the collection. The Unicorn of Scotland was used in the royal coat of arms for Scotland. Adopted by Scottish king Alexander III, that coat of arms remains unchanged since his time on the throne.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Unicorn Coin is the image of the Unicorn of Scotland. It is depicted in this coin series standing on its rear hooves with its front hooves on the royal coat of arms. The red lion design, representative of England, is found on the shield in the “rampant” stance, which is considered the fiercest in heraldry.
The obverse of all British Gold Queen’s Beast Coins includes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s right-profile portrait on these coins is the fifth-generation design since Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of England in 1953. Jody Clark designed this image in 2015 and has created all images in the reverse of the Queen’s Beast Collection to date.
