The initial issue in 2017 backed the trident on the reverse with wave lines to reflect the nation’s deep connection to the sea. For the 2018 release, the Scottsdale Mint introduces a hammered look that offers a more rustic and ancient visual characteristic.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Barbados Silver Trident Coin is the image of the national shield. The shield of Barbados features native plant life from the island and is supported on either side by native wildlife found in this region of the Caribbean. Above the shield is the broken shaft of a trident.
Barbados was a long-held British Overseas Territory. In 1966, the nation broke with the United Kingdom and gained its independence. The inclusion of the broken trident shaft depicts that break from the UK.
