In this exclusive listing, just a handful of 2018 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins are available to purchase from JM Bullion with a unique John Mercanti signed label. Mercanti designed the Wedge Tail Eagle for the last three years of the coin series and is the first American coin designer to feature in the Perth Mint catalog.
Mercanti agreed to sign a limited number of labels for the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, which issues those labels along with coins adjudged to be in perfect condition. Coins in MS70 condition have full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws visible anywhere on the coins.
The former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Mercanti retired in 2010 from his role with the US Mint but did not walk away from coin design. He is most famous to date for his creation of the heraldic eagle design on the reverse side of the American Silver Eagle coins form the US Mint.
On the obverse of these Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins is the fourth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. She is shown in right-profile relief with engravings of her name, the nation of issue, and face value of the coin surrounding. This was designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose “IRB” initials feature under the Queen’s bust.
The reverse of the 2018 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin includes Mercanti’s new design for the fifth issue of these coins. In this depiction, a female eagle is shown at the nest with a hatchling, the two captured almost beak to beak. In the background, a large male eagle is visible flying back toward the nest.
