The American Platinum Eagle is a unique entry in the American Eagle Series. While the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle have featured the same design on their proof and bullion versions since 1986, the American Platinum Eagle’s proof version has a new reverse design each year. This makes it the only major bullion coin from the US Mint to feature a new design with each annual release.
All 2018 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins in this JM Bullion listing feature a certification of Mint State 70 from the Professional Coin Grading Service. Known as a perfect specimen, these coins have full, original mint luster and lack any signs of detracting flaws or other blemishes. The First Strike label included in the slab indicates the coins were received for grading within the first 30 days of their release by the United States Mint.
On the obverse of all American Platinum Eagle Coins is Liberty. This depiction was created in 1997 by John Mercanti when he was a US Mint engraver. The design is based upon the State of Liberty, and captures the face and head of Liberty as she stares out in the future.
The reverse of the 2018 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coin includes the same design each year, one which was created in 1997 by Thomas D. Rogers. This design showcases an American bald eagle in flight over the nation. With its wings spread wide, the ground is visible below and the sun rises in the background over the horizon.
All American Platinum Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint. Platinum Eagle bullion coins were issued from 1997 to 2008, but were suspended for several years during and after the Great Recession. Bullion production has been spotty since, with the coins reemerging in 2014, suspended again in 2014, and issued to date since 2016.
