The American Gold Eagle coin debuted in 1986 with bullion and proof versions. It is the only major bullion coin program from the United States Mint to feature fractional-weight options, which are produced and sold in the bullion and proof versions only. The third option, the burnished Gold Eagle, is only available in 1 oz weight.
Release of the 2018 American Gold Eagle coins comes at a time when the 1 oz weight has been rising in demand in recent years. The 2014 release had 425,000 1 oz coins sold, while the 2015 jumped to 626,500 and the 2016 coins featured a total of 817,500. The coins tend to ebb and flow with the market, but that two-year run in rising mintages was the first since 2008-2009.
On the obverse of all American Gold Eagle coins you’ll find the image of Lady Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Of course, the design has been upgraded since that time to feature 50 stars (up from 46) around Liberty’s figure, but it is otherwise the same design Saint-Gaudens created for the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907.
The reverse of the 2018 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin includes the image of an American bald eagle as it flies over the nest carrying an olive branch. Below, a group of hatchlings eagerly awaits in the nest while a female stands watchful guard over them. Engravings on this face include the nation of issue, weight, metal content, and face value of the coins.
