Despite a boycott of South African gold and other goods by Western nations in the 1970s and 1980s, the South African Gold Krugerrand had established itself as the preeminent gold coin in the world by 1980. At this point in time, the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. In fact, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, American Gold Eagle, and Chinese Gold Panda all stem from the popularity of the Krugerrand.
All 2018 ¼ oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in this condition show no signs of wear and tear, though minor flaws from the production process at the mint are possible. These flaws are limited to minor breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
Given the dominance of the Gold Krugerrand and its growing popularity by 1980, the South African Mint decided to expand the series with fractional weights. That year, the ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz coins were unveiled to provide greater options for investors.
The obverse of all 2018 ¼ oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coins are struck with the image of Paul Kruger as the focus. The left-profile portrait of Kruger celebrates the achievements of the man who became President of South Africa and a leading figure of the Boer cause. Engravings around his figure include the nation of issue in both English and Afrikaans.
On the reverse of South African Gold Krugerrand Coins is the image of the national animal of South Africa. The Springbok antelope is captured in right-profile relief along with the engravings of the name of the coin, year of issue, metal content (English and Afrikaans), and weight.
Both images on the South African Gold Krugerrand coins are similar to those used since 1967. In 1984, the Kruger and Springbok designs were modernized. Otto Schultz completed the obverse design and Coert Steynberg was responsible for the reverse.
