Although Proof Mexican Gold Libertads were first issued by the Mexican Mint in the 1980s, the series only recently became established with annual issues. Each of the 2018 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins comes with an individual protective capsule. These coins boast traditional proof visual elements that include frosted devices and mirrored background fields. The 2018 coin had a mintage of only 1,000 specimens, level in volume with the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/20 oz coins. The 1/10 oz coin had the highest mintage of 1,500 coins.
The 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad was first issued by the Mexican Mint in 2004. Before this issue, Proof Gold Libertads had only been released in 1983 with a 1 oz gold coin and in 1989 with a 1/2 oz gold coin. The 2004 release of the Proof Gold Libertads brought back the two previously issued weights, while adding 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold coins for the first time.
On the obverse of 2018 Proof Mexican Gold Libertads, you will find a depiction of the Mexican coat of arms. The modern national seal depicts a golden eagle in left-profile relief on the branch of a prickly pear cactus. The eagle is shown with raised wings as it uses one of its talons and its beak to battle with a serpent.
The reverse of the 2018 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coin comes with a depiction of Winged Victory, This design is based on the bronze statue that stands in the center of Mexico City atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Winged Victory is based on ancient depictions of the goddess Nike and features a female figure with large wings, a hand clutching a crown wreath, and another holding broken chains.
