The Canadian wood bison is scientifically known as Bison bison Athabasca. They are the largest land animals in North America, with males (bulls) weighing between 900 to 2,000 kg (2,000 to 4,400 lbs) and females (cows) weighing between 360 to 800 kg (800 to 1,800 lbs). They have a distinctive hump on their shoulders and a shaggy brown coat.
Wood bison are primarily found in the boreal forest and muskeg regions of northern Canada, particularly in areas of Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. Their cousins, the Plains bison, are primarily found throughout the American Midwest in the United States.
In the obverse of 2018 1/4 oz Gold Buffalo Coins, you will find a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in the 2003 portrait from Susanna Blunt. Ms. Blunt’s bust of Elizabeth II was just the second monarch design from a Canadian artist and one of the few during the Queen’s reign to lack a crown.
For the reverse side of 2018 Canadian Gold Buffalos, the mint features the bust of a bison head. Here, the bison is shown in right-profile relief with its large horns and shaggy fur around its neck.
These 2018 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Buffalo Coins are available for purchase in sealed packaging from the mint. The Canadian Gold Buffalo includes radial lines throughout the background field on both sides.
