Each 2018 ¼ oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Unicorn Coin listed here today is in Mint State 69 condition according to the NGC. Considered a near-perfect coin, these MS69 specimens exhibit their full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws present. These flaws are limited in scope to the areas outside the primary focal points of the design, and limited in nature to minuscule hairlines or contact marks.
The Unicorn of Scotland is the fourth release in the bullion series of the Queen’s Beast coins. It was preceded in the release schedule by, in order, the Lion of England, Griffin of Edward III, and the Red Dragon of Wales. Tales of the mythical unicorn date back as far as 400 BC, with modern scholars believing that ancient civilizations merely confused or misidentified animals such as wild bulls or the rhinoceros with wild horses.
On the reverse of the 2018 ¼ oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Coin you’ll find the image of the Unicorn of Scotland. Captured in this range based upon the milk-white coloration of the horse and golden hooves, horn, and mane, the unicorn holds the royal coat of Scotland beneath its hooves. This coat of arms has been unchanged since the rule of the Scottish king Alexander III.
The obverse of all Gold Queen’s Beast Coins features the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty features on the obverse of all British coinage, with this particular design created in 2015 by Royal Mint Engraver Jody Clark. Clark created the obverse effigy of the Queen along with all 10 designs planned in this collection, and this portrait of Her Majesty is the fifth-generation release during her long reign.
