The Year of the Dog has arrived in 2018, and the Perth Mint is not disappointing with its latest Lunar Series II issue. The gold coin collection includes a total of eight weight options, from 1 Kilo, 10 oz, 2 oz, and 1 oz gold down to the ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz coins. Don’t forget, there are also silver options across seven weights!
All of the designs in the Lunar Series II program dating from 2013 onward come courtesy of Ing Ing Jong. A talented illustrator and coin designer, she came on board with Perth Mint as a coin designer in 2011.
Each 2018 ¼ oz Australian Gold Dog Coin is in BU condition. Coins in BU condition have no signs of wear and tear, though production flaws are possible. These are limited to minor issues such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
The obverse of all Australian Gold Dog coins includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s image features on all commonwealth coinage, with this particular design representing her fourth-generation portrait on coins. It was developed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
On the reverse of the 2018 ¼ oz Australian Gold Dog Coin is the image of a Labrador Retriever. Known simply to many as “labs,” these lovable dogs are classified as gun-retriever dogs, but also serve as capable service dogs for the blind or as therapy dogs for those suffering from other conditions.
Perth Mint is located in Perth, Western Australia. A state-owned entity, the Perth Mint was originally opened in 1899 as the third and final British Royal Mint facility in the country. Today it is the oldest operating mint in the nation.
