American Gold Eagle coins were first made available by the United States Mint in 1986. Because of the nation’s past issuance of gold coins using the term “eagle,” The US Mint often refers to American Gold Eagle coins by their weight to avoid confusion with the pre-1933 Gold Eagle, which were circulation coins issued with a $10 (USD) face value.
All 2018 ¼ oz American Gold Eagle Coins offered here today are in near-perfect condition according to the PCGS. Coins with a grade of Mint State 69 feature full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule hairlines and contact marks found only outside the primary focal areas.
As a coin with a First Strike designation, these ¼ oz American Gold Eagle coins were received by the PCGS for certification with a certain time window. The coins must arrive at the PCGS or an approved third-party depository within the first 30 days following the 2018 release date set by the United States Mint.
On the obverse of the American Gold Eagle coin is an iconic American image. The design of Lady Liberty featured on these coins originally appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933, and was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He would live to see his design make it to the coin’s face though, as he died from illness just months before its release in 1907.
The reverse of 2018 ¼ oz American Gold Eagle coins features the imagery of a nesting bald eagle family. In the design, created exclusively for the Gold Eagle series in 1986 by Miley Busiek, one adult eagle is depicted flying back to the nest as another adult eagle watches over the hatchlings in the nest.
