The Mexican Independence Victory Column, known locally as “El Ángel” or the Angel of Independence, stands majestically on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. Completed in 1910 under President Porfirio Díaz to commemorate the centennial of Mexico’s independence movement, this 45-meter monument is crowned with a striking bronze statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory.
For the obverse of 2018 Proof Mexican Gold Libertads, the mint features the national coat of arms. Mexico’s national seal is inspired by the Codex Mendoza symbolism from the Aztecs in 1524. The design shows a golden eagle in left-profile relief on a prickly pear cactus as it devours a snake. It is said the Aztecs were told by their god, Huitzilopochtli, to look for this sign and build their city there.
In the reverse design of 2018 1/20 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coins, the Mexican Mint features a detailed depiction of Winged Victory atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column. The monument is a celebration of Mexican independence from Spain and the design includes the volcanic mountain peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distant background.
