The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf series has expanded numerous times since its introduction in 1979. From 1979 to November 1982, the coins were only available in the 1 oz weight. In late 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced .9999 pure gold content in the series, increasing from the original .999 pure gold.
That same year, the mint began to introduce fractional weights into the series. The first were the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins that year. In 1986, the ½ oz coin was introduced into the series. The 1/20 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1993, and has been a regular in the collection since that time.
All 2018 1/20 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, but do possess potential flaws from the production process. These flaws are limited to breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and possible contact marks.
On the obverse of all 2018 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth-generation design and was created in 2003 by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. It is only the third to appear on Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins, and is the first in Royal Canadian Mint history to feature the Queen without a crown.
The reverse of the 2018 1/20 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin features the sugar maple leaf. In use since 1979, the only changes to this design have been to enhance the appearance of the maple leaf itself. Radial lines were added to the background of both sides in 2015 to enhance security measures against counterfeiting.
