The 2018 1/10 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medallions are split across four colorized assay card packages. In previous years, the white label was the predominant color offered. This year, however, KOMSCO has split the mintage as evenly as possible across the four colorized assay cards.
The Chiwoo Cheonwang Series is on its third design since the debut of the collection. The latest design follows Chiwoo as his forces begin to engage in battle on the field. He rides a powerful warhorse, but all you can see is Chiwoo as he prepares to fell an opponent with his sword.
On the obverse of 2018 Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medallions is the image of his battle shield. The shield of Chiwoo Cheonwang features the image of Do ggae bi, a fearsome mythical spirit similar to the hobgoblin of Western cultures. The face was so grotesque it was believed to ward off evil spirits.
The reverse of all 2018 1/10 oz South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Gold Medallions includes the image of Chiwoo as he rides his horse in battle. With a ferocious look on his face, Chiwoo lowers his sword to cut down his enemies in battle.
KOMSCO is the government-owned company that fills the role of official mint for the Republic of Korea. The mint was founded in the midst of the Korean War as South Korea sought to secure its currency programs.
