The United States Mint offers the American Gold Eagle coin in ½ oz, ¼ oz, and these 1/10 oz Gold Eagle options. Given the higher price of gold during the 21st century, the fractional weights have often proven more popular for first-time buyers because of their more affordable pricing. However, the fractional weights have always maintained some level of popularity.
During the Y2K scare, for example, the 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle coin became the first fractional weight to surpass the 1 oz gold coin in mintage in program history. In 1999, both the 1 oz and 1/10 oz coin set sales records that still stand today. However, while the 1 oz gold coin sold 1,505,026 units, the 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle set a program record with 2,750,338 coins sold.
