The iconic Liberty design has been a cornerstone of American coinage since the nation’s founding, evolving significantly over time while maintaining its symbolic importance. The earliest Liberty designs featured profile portraits influenced by classical Greek and Roman imagery, with the first Chief Engraver Robert Scot creating the Flowing Hair Liberty in 1793. Throughout the 19th century, Liberty took on increasingly Americanized features, notably in Christian Gobrecht’s Seated Liberty design and James B. This design was crafted by Justin Kunz of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, a Mint Sculptor-Engraver.

Shown mid-flight, the eagle’s intricate feathers and piercing gaze capture its commanding presence. This design was created by Chris T.
