This 2017 issue is the first in an ongoing series of .9999 pure 24-karat gold coins from the U.S. Mint, each showcasing a unique and contemporary interpretation of Liberty.
The United States Mint was established following the passage of the Coinage Act, also known as the Mint Act, on April 2, 1792, during George Washington’s presidency. This pivotal legislation created the first national mint in the young republic, initially housed in a small building in Philadelphia, which was then the nation’s capital. The founding of the Mint represented a significant step toward economic sovereignty for the fledgling nation, as it allowed America to create its own currency rather than relying on foreign coins that had previously dominated circulation throughout the colonies and early states.
The obverse of 2017-W High Relief 225th Anniversary American Liberty Gold Coins presents Liberty with African-American features for the first time on a U.S. coin. Her crown of stars draws inspiration from the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol dome. The portrait was designed by Justin Kunz of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
On the reverse of 2017-W 1 oz American Liberty Gold Coins, the coin features a detailed depiction of a bald eagle in mid-flight, its wings extended and gaze fixed ahead. This image was created by Artistic Infusion Program designer Chris T. Costello and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso. Struck in high-relief at the West Point Mint, each coin also includes edge lettering with the inscription “225th Anniversary,” framed by stars—a feature used on U.S. coinage only once before.
