Coins with a PR70 certification exhibit full, original mint luster and lack all detracting flaws. DCAM coins, or deep-cameo, have a strong, frosted matte finish to the design features and a clear, deeply-mirrored background field.
The American Gold Eagle coin program debuted in 1986 with bullion and proof versions available, but fractional-weight coins such as this ¼ oz. specimen were not initially available in proof. The Proof Gold Eagles did not expand from a 1 oz offering until the introduction of the ½ oz coin in 1987, followed by the ¼ and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.
Historically the smaller coins were less popular than the 1 oz options, but today the ¼ oz Proof American Gold Eagle has grown in stature to a point where it and the 1/10 oz coin are often the most popular options in the collector’s range of US Mint gold coins.
On the obverse of all American Gold Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Liberty. Created in 1907 by Saint-Gaudens, he never actually lived to see his creation reach circulation on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. He died just months before the coins went into production after complications from an illness.
The reverse of the 2017 ¼ oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin features a family of bald eagles congregating around their nest. As a group of hatchlings rest inside the nest a mother eagle stands guard. Meanwhile, a male is depicted returning to the nest with an olive branch. This design was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek for the exclusive use of the American Gold Eagle series.
