The ¼ oz Proof American Gold Eagle did not debut in 1986 with the vast majority of the all-new American Eagle coins released that year. While the bullion version of the Gold Eagle featured all four weights investors now know and love, the proof coins had only a 1 oz weight in 1986.

For the proof series, expansion didn’t come until 1987, when a ½ oz fractional-weight coin was introduced. Expansion occurred again in 1988, with the addition of this ¼ oz coin and a 1/10 oz weight as well. Today, the ¼ oz Proof American Gold Eagle is among the most popular versions of the coin, together with the 1/10 oz option.

On the obverse side of the 2017-W ¼ oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin you’ll find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty. Saint-Gaudens was personally chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help revitalize American gold coin design, and this image of Liberty was the result.

The reverse side of all American Gold Eagles bears the depiction of a family of nesting bald eagles created in 1986 by Miley Busiek. Her vision of a male bald eagle returning to its nest, where a female guards the hatchlings, is used only on American Gold Eagle coins.
