Coin Highlights:
When the United States Mint released the American Gold Eagle for the first time, it marked the return of a coin design not seen on US coinage since 1933. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the Lady Liberty image in 1907 at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt, who had initiated a bold plan to redesign all American coinage with a modern, distinctly American appeal.
Saint-Gaudens’ design featured Liberty walking forward from the nation’s capital of Washington DC with her torch held high in her right hand and the olive branch of peace in her left. Her depiction was originally surrounded by 46 stars, but changed in 1912 to feature 48 stars after the admission of New Mexico and Arizona into the Union.
All 2017-W ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins in this product listing are available to you with a PR70 grade from the PCGS. Coins in this condition are perfect specimens with full, original mint luster and feature no detracting flaws. Deep-cameo, or DCAM, is a designation for proof coins with a strong, frosted matte finish and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
The obverse of the 2017 ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin is the image of Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design featured Liberty in full-figure relief as she guides the nation forward with her torch. Saint-Gaudens’s design originally appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933.
On the reverse of the 2017 ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle is the image of the American bald eagle. In this design, there is a nest with a group of hatchlings under the watchful eye of a female bald eagle. A male bald eagle is shown flying overhead. This design is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle series and was created by Miley Busiek exclusively for these coins.
