Niue Silver Hawksbill Turtle Coins were first introduced by the New Zealand Mint in 2010 as the Fiji Silver Taku. The coin design on the reverse was the same as it is today, featuring the image of the Hawksbill turtle which is native to the waters of the South Pacific. The difference in naming (Taku vs Niue Hawksbill) was a result of the use of Fijian language, in which Taku is the name used to refer to the Hawksbill.
Since 2014, the Hawksbill Turtle has been released annually for the nation of Niue. The reason behind the change was linked to a political row between the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Fiji. The Fijian islands had suggested a move away from its British connections, and the coin was shifted to Niue, which is a self-governing region of New Zealand, which is part of the commonwealth of the United Kingdom.
On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz Niue Silver Hawksbill Turtle Coin you’ll find the image of Queen Elizabeth II, captured in right-profile relief by Ian Rank-Broadley. This design is the fourth-generation depiction of Her Majesty on British coinage and has been in use since 1998.
The reverse of the 2017 1 oz Niue Silver Hawksbill Turtle Coin includes the image of a hawksbill turtle as it swims through the bubbles and water of the South Pacific. Hawksbill turtles migrate throughout the South Pacific, from the northern shores of New Zealand to the waters of Niue and Fiji.
Each of the 2017 1 oz Niue Silver Hawksbill Turtle Coins in this listing is in BU condition. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear on the surfaces, though you’ll notice the presences of minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the coining process at the mint.
The New Zealand Mint is the exclusive home of the Hawksbill Turtle coin. Located in Auckland, this privately-owned mint is not the official sovereign mint of New Zealand, but is the only operating facility in the country.
