A gilded coin is one which features a layering of 24-karat gold over a silver blank. In the case of these 2017 American Silver Eagle coins, the gilded gold finish is found on the coin’s obverse face, altering the classic image of Walking Liberty in a stunningly beautiful fashion.
The 2017 American Silver Eagle Coins available to you here today are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition feature no signs of wear and tear, however you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the striking of the blanks by the mint.
On the obverse of all 2017 American Silver Eagle coins is Adolph A. Weinman’s unforgettable Walking Liberty design. Created in 1916, it featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar circulation coin through 1947, and was revived and modernized in 1986 for use on the nation’s official silver bullion coin.
The reverse of 2017 American Silver Eagle coins includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design of the American bald eagle set behind the nation’s heraldic shield, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other has been used on various American coins since 1794.
US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti (1986-2010) refined and modernized this design for use on the American Silver Eagle coin in 1986 when he took over the position, and it continues today as the primary reverse design of the coin. There is no gilded finish of 24-karat gold applied to the reverse of the coin though, only to Liberty’s figure on the obverse.
The United States Mint originally strikes these coins, but does not apply gilded finishes or colorization to any of its products. A limited mintage of 5,000 coins were secured by Emporium Hamburg, a third-party authorized dealer in Germany, that applied the 24-karat gilded gold finish.
