Somalia Gold Elephant coins celebrate the beauty and endangered status of the world’s largest land mammal. African elephants can be broken down into two subspecies, with the bush elephant roaming the plains of the Serengeti and the forest elephant sticking closer to mountainous regions of the African continent.
On the obverse of the 2017 5 oz Somalia Gold Elephant Proof Coin is the image of an adult bull elephant standing on the open plains. The grassy patch in the foreground gives way to an open space in the background that includes a small hut with a palm tree rising above it. Engravings on this face identify the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, as well as its series name and represented creature.
The reverse of all 2017 Somalia Gold Elephant Proof Coins features the coat of arms for Somalia. The crest includes a single star set against a background of horizontal lines on the heraldic shield. Two leopards are featured, one on either side, holding the shield upright. Engravings identify the nation of issue, year of issue, and face value of the coin.
Located in Munich, Bavaria, the Bavarian State Mint is one of Germany’s oldest mints and serves as one of four primary coining facilities in the country. It is a state-owned entity of the Free State of Bavaria that opened in 1158.
