Each 2017 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin in this listing is in BU condition. Coins in this condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws in the finish ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the coining process at the mint.
The 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin was introduced as an option for investors buying silver from the Mexican Mint in 1996, the same time that a 2 oz coin was added to the series. The 5 oz coin experienced strong demand in its first year, but has largely seen mintage figures below 10,000 every year with the exception of 2009 when the Great Recession pushed demand for silver to all-time highs.
On the obverse side of the coin is the image of Winged Victory. Her angelic figure features prominently on the Mexican Independence Victory Column in the center of Mexico City. The statue was erected in 1921 in honor of the nation’s centennial independence celebration, which was the same year Winged Victory appeared on the gold Centenario coin for the first time.
The reverse of the 2017 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad coin features the Mexican coat of arms. There are actually several renditions on the coin, with the modern version in the center surrounded by all 10 historic versions used since 1821.
Mexico’s national mint is the Mexican Mint, which strikes the Mexican Silver Libertad each year. Founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors, it is the oldest operating mint in the Western Hemisphere. Today it is controlled by the federal government and overseen by Banco de Mexico.
