Germany’s Bavarian State Mint has aggressively expanded the offering and quality of Somalia Elephant coins in recent years. In 2016, the mint not only increased purity from .999 to .9999 across the lineup, it also added a new Somalia Platinum Elephant coin for the first time.
Now, for 2017 the mint has expanded the offering of Somalia Silver Elephants from just a 1 oz and 1 Kilo coin to include three fractional weights, these 2017 2 oz Somalia Silver Elephants, and 5 oz and 10 oz coin, as well.
The reverse side of all Somalia Silver Elephant Coins released since 2004 features the same design. The coat of arms for Somalia is depicted on this side of the coin, which includes two leopards holding up the nation’s heraldic shield. The shield bears a single star in the center set against a backdrop of horizontal lines.
On the obverse of the 2017 2 oz Somalia Silver Elephant is the all-new design for this year’s release. It features a single elephant standing on the open Savannah, with a small patch of grass at its feet and a hut, with palm tree for shade, in the background.
All 2017 2 oz Somalia Silver Elephant Coins in this listing are BU graded specimens. Coins with this grade exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the coining process.
The Bavarian State Mint opened in 1154, and today is one of Germany’s oldest mint facilities. It is also one of the country’s four primary mints, producing German Euros in addition to commemorative gold and silver coins.

“Received my 2 oz Somalian Elephants today. When I opened the box I was surprised at the size of these awesome coins! I expected them to be the usual diameter of a standars 1 oz coins and double thick like the Queen’s Beast series and the New Zealand 2 oz Turtles, but they went bigger in diameter on these elephants. I knew I was going to like them, but holding them in hand I like them even more than I expected! These coins are awesome and i look forward to the 2018 Somalian Elephants coming up.”
