The Queen’s Beast collection of silver and gold coins from the Royal Mint is slated to feature a total of 10 designs. Each new release represents one of the ten beasts carved into wooden statues that was present at Westminster Abbey during the 1953 coronation ceremony for Queen Elizabeth II.
In the first release, the Lion of England was featured. Now, for the second release the Royal Mint introduces the mythical Griffin. With the head, wings, and front paws of an eagle, and the body of a lion, this was said to be the most powerful animal in the world. That power comes from the lion’s status as king of the beasts, and the eagle’s status as king of the birds.
On the reverse of all 2017 2 oz British Queen’s Beast Griffin Silver Coins you’ll find the image of a Griffin standing tall and proud, its wings fully outstretched over its head. It has its front paws up on a shield, and includes engravings of the weight, metal content, purity, and year of issue.
The obverse of the British Queen’s Beast Griffin Silver Coin includes the latest right-profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s image appears on the obverse of all British coinage, and this 2015 creation from Jody Clark is the latest enhancement of the Queen’s portrait. Clark, the youngest artist ever to render a portrait of the Queen for the Royal Mint, also created the Griffin on the reverse.
Each 2017 2 oz British Queen’s Beast Griffin Silver Coin is in BU condition. Coins in this condition bear no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the coining process.
