The Red Dragon of Wales has a long history that actually predates the establishment of the Kingdom of England. Historic accounts of a dragon in Wales date back to the 6th century. It was often referred to as the red dragon of Cadwallader, a legendary king of Gwynedd. Fast forward nearly one-thousand years, and the Red Dragon was carried by Tudor monarchs.
Owen Tudor, the father of King Henry VII, used the Red Dragon in his personal emblem and made claims to Welsh heritage. Henry VII carried the red dragon standard in battle during the Wars of the Roses when he defeated Edward IV to become King of England. Later, his son, King Henry VIII, used the red dragon on his Royal Navy ships.
On the reverse of 2017 2 oz British Silver Queen’s Beast Dragon Coins is a modern twist on the classic arms of Llewelyn ap Griffith. The last native Prince of Wales, Griffith had a quartered shield with four leopards supported by a fiery red dragon. Long an official emblem of Wales, in 1959 Queen Elizabeth II made the beast was the official design for the Welsh flag.
The obverse of 2017 British Silver Queen’s Beast Dragon Coins includes an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark and serves as the fifth-generation effigy of Her Majesty to feature on British coins.
