The Queen’s Beast Coins debuted in gold and silver bullion in 2016 with this Lion of England design. While the bullion series has already reached three designs as of mid-2017, the proof series didn’t launch until 2017 with the Proof British Silver Queen’s Beast Lion Coin and the subsequent Unicorn of Scotland release.
On the obverse of all Proof British Silver Queen’s Beast Lion Coins you’ll find Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. Her Majesty appears on the obverse of all British coinage; bullion, proof, and circulation alike. This is the fifth-generation depiction of the Queen and was created in 2015 by Jody Clark of the Royal Mint.
The reverse of the 2017 10 oz Proof British Silver Queen’s Beast Lion Coin features the Lion of England design. The lion is a critical beast in British heraldry, symbolizing power and honor, and appears on the nation’s coat of arms in a column of three lions. Jody Clark also designed this depiction of the beast, which stands on its hind legs behind the Royal Coat of arms with one paw raised in defense.
England’s Royal Mint was founded in London in the 8th century, eventually taking up residence within the Tower of London by 1279. Today, it operates from its base in Llantrisant, South Wales, producing coinage for the United Kingdom and other foreign nations such as New Zealand.
