KOMSCO released the first Chiwoo Cheonwang bullion products in 2016 with a full-size image of Chiwoo on the coins reverse face. Known as the God of War to Korean people, Chiwoo was said to possess many magical powers he used on the field of battle to overwhelm and confuse his opponents.
With the 2017 release of the Chiwoo Cheonwang silver and gold products, a new design was introduced for the reverse face. Previously depicted standing alone on a field of battle with a spear in one hand and his shield in the other, he is now featured on the 2017 release astride his powerful and fearsome war horse.
The obverse of the South Korean Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang features the image of Chiwoos battle shield. Depicted on the front of his field is the terrifying image of Do ggae bi, a mythical character similar to the hob goblin of Western cultures. This image was often hung from the end of roof tiles on homes to ward off evil spirits.
Each coins obverse includes a latent security image engraved below the shield which includes the purity of the gold used in the coin. Other engravings identify the year of issue, weight, purity, metal content, and nation of issue.
The reverse of the 2017 1 oz South Korean Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang depicts that new design of Chiwoo. He is now shown riding his powerful war horse, while still wielding a long spear and holding his shield for protection.
All of the 2017 1 oz South Korean Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, with the only possible flaws including breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks as a result of striking during production.
