In the 10th release of the Native American Silver Dollar Series we meet the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw people are descended from the ancient Hopewell and Mississippian cultures in the present-day Southeastern United States. The Choctaw coalesced as a people in the 17th century, and have long lived throughout the southeast from Oklahoma and Texas to Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Also calling the southeast of the US home is the Agkistrodon piscivorus, a species of pit viper snake that is highly poisonous. Known by many names, most commonly the cottonmouth and water moccasin, this snake is semiaquatic and is found throughout the Southeastern United States from Texas to Georgia and the Carolinas.
On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz Proof Mississippi Choctaw Water Moccasin Silver Coin you’ll find the image of members of the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw people have a modern population estimated around 160,000 living members as of 2005.
The reverse of the Choctaw Water Moccasin Silver Coin features the image of the venomous snake. These snakes are the only semi-aquatic viper species in the world, and while they’re commonly found in slow-moving and shallow lakes, streams, marshes, and bayous, they have been known to enter the seas of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico as well.
