The Native Dollars Series from the Native American Mint is designed to represent the different states of the United States with a particular tribe known to have lived or currently reside within its boundaries. Additionally, the reverse design of each highlights an animal either native to the local environment or important to the survival and culture of the tribe.
On the reverse of the 2017 1 oz Proof Indian Miami Mink Silver Coin you’ll find the image of a small mink. Engravings identify the state represented in this release in the Native Dollars Series, as well as the animal representative of that state.
Mink are dark-colored animals that come from the family Mustelidae. Similar to the weasel, otter, and ferret, the mink is a carnivorous, semiaquatic mammal that exists today as two separate extant species: the American mink and European mink. The sea mink is an extinct species in the family that was related to the American mink, but much larger in size.
The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma is a federally recognized tribe of Miami Indians, who originally lived largely within the boundaries of modern-day Indiana. The Miami People were known during early contact with Western explorers and conquerors as a Great Lakes tribe, inhabiting lands from Indiana into southwest Michigan in the west and western Ohio in the east.
On the obverse of all 2017 1 oz Proof Indiana Miami Mink Silver Coins you’ll find the image of a Miami tribal member. The Miami people inhabited large sections of the southern Great Lakes until 1846, at which point in time most had been resettled forcibly to the Indian Territory, which is now modern-day Oklahoma.
