This 2017-coin release is the second coin featured in the Nocturnal By Nature collection. The Canadian Royal Mint has released this collection to showcase surprise encounters with nocturnal wildlife native to Canada. The little brown bat of Canada is known for living in areas from the tip of the Great Lakes all the way to the Arctic tundra. The bat uses echolocation to navigate through the wild and locate insect prey to eat. Thanks to a mix of detailed engraving, unique black plating, and skillful artistry, this coin collection brings a unique nighttime encounter to the viewer.
The obverse of the 2017 $20 1 oz Proof Canadian Silver Nocturnal By Nature Brown Bat Coin shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, along with two inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” and “D.G. REGINA”. The effigy of Her Majesty the Queen has been featured on many coin releases from mints around the world.
The reverse design of the 2017 coin was created by artist Calder Moore and gives the viewer a face-to-face encounter with the Canadian brown bat.
