2017 is the Year of the Rooster on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, and for the 10th release of the program the Perth Mint has a stunning new design available for its coins. In fact, there is a different design in use again this year on each of the silver and gold versions of the coin.
In this 2017 1 oz Proof Australian Gold Rooster Coin you’ll find a different take on the Year of the Rooster celebration than was produced for the silver coins. The Year of the Rooster covers those born in 2017 and every 12th year going backward, with those born under the sign said to be loyal, honest, hardworking, and sociable.
The reverse of the 2017 1 oz Proof Australian Gold Rooster Coin features the image of a lone male rooster standing amongst the bamboo shoots and flowers of China. Engravings on this side are standard for the series and include the name of the issue, Perth Mint mark, and the Chinese symbol for rooster.
On the obverse of all Proof Australian Gold Rooster coins is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Featured in right-profile relief, this image was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and continues to feature on Perth Mint Lunar Series II coins despite an updated effigy of Her Majesty to ensure continuity of obverse design across the entire 12-coin series.
