The all-new 2016 Australian Silver Kangaroo marked the launch of a new silver bullion coin series from the Perth Mint. That new Silver Kangaroo is the first-ever .9999 pure silver bullion collection from the mint, and its design appears as a privy mark on the reverse face of these 2017 1 oz Australian Silver Koala coins.
The Silver Koala program debuted in 2007 as part of an expansion of the Perth Mint’s annual silver bullion release programs, which launched in 1990 with the Australian Silver Kookaburra. Over the past 10 years, 10 new designs have debuted from Perth Mint celebrating the cuddly koala.
On the reverse of this 2017 Australian Silver Koala is the 11th new design in the collection, and perfectly captures the life of a koala. This depiction shows an adult koala sitting on the ground at the base of a eucalyptus tree, which provides the primary food in its diet, and the Kangaroo privy mark is featured to the left-hand side of the design field.
The obverse of the 2017 1 oz Kangaroo Privy Australian Silver Koala features the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty features on the obverse of all Australian coinage, and her effigy has been on Australian coins since 1952. The most recent one in use on Australian currency, this is a 1998 right-profile portrait from Ian Rank-Broadley.
