The 35th anniversary of the Falklands Liberation occurred in 2017, and the Pobjoy Mint in England’s Surrey county. The Falkland Islands are an archipelago location in the South Atlantic Ocean. The islands are located east of the southern tip of South America’s Patagonian coast, closest to the nation of Argentina.
Since 1833, the British crown has asserted rule over the islands. In 1982, Argentine forces occupied the islands in an attempt to reclaim the islands for the nation of Argentina. The majority of the islands’ native-born residents are of British ancestry however, and Falklanders supported the British in their Falklands War to remove the Argentine forces.
The 2018 1 oz Silver Reverse Frosted Anniversary of Liberation Coin is issued by Pobjoy Mint to mark the 35th anniversary of the liberation of the islands by British forces. In total, 649 Argentine soldiers died along with 255 British military personnel. The silver bullion coins have a mintage of 42,671 and honor the sacrifices of British Armed Forces during the 74-day conflict.
On the reverse of the Silver Reverse Frosted Anniversary of Liberation Coin is the image of Britannia, is found on the coin’s surface. She holds her trident and gazes out over the roiling seas. The coin’s reverse is frosted with matte finishes to Britannia’s figure and mirrored finishes to the waves.
