Known to most as Big Ben, the iconic towering structure at the north end of Britain’s Houses of Parliament is actually known as the Elizabeth Tower. The structure takes its common name from the tone of the bell that rings out from the top of the tower at the top of each hour of the day. Big Ben is the first issue from an exciting new series of silver coins known as the Landmarks of Britain. The 2017 1 oz British Landmarks of Britain Big Ben Coins are currently available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The history of Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben is a complex one. Originally completed in 1859, the structure was originally known as Clock Tower and was designed by Charles Barry as part of a new palace after a fire destroyed the old Palace of Westminster in October 1834. During the reign of Queen Victoria I, the structure was known as St. Stephen’s Tower because MPs in British parliament originally sat at St. Stephen’s Hall.
It wasn’t until 2012 that the building was given its recent name of Elizabeth Tower. The building was, in fact, still officially known simply as Clock Tower until a proposed name change to honor Queen Elizabeth II was passed in 2012 during the year of her diamond jubilee as the Queen of England.
On the reverse of the 2017 1 oz British Big Ben Coin is the image of the bell tower as one stands on the ground below gazing up at the impressive structure. The tower includes a total of five bells in all, with four quarter bells that chime on the quarter hours and the largest bell, Big Ben, which rings on the hour.
The obverse of the 2017 British Big Ben Coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here at the age of 89 as depicted in a fifth-generation right-profile portrait designed for the Royal Mint in 2015 by Jody Clark.
