Australian Silver Kookaburra coins debuted from the Perth Mint in 1990. Prior to the issue of these coins, the most prominent coin series from the mint was the Australian Gold Nugget. However, the Silver Kookaburra’s release changed the trajectory of Australian coinage.
Since the 1990 issue of the Kookaburra, all major bullion coin programs to follow focus their design motifs on native Australian species. The Gold Nuggets were renamed in 1990 as the Australian Gold Kangaroo, and subsequent major program releases include the Silver Kookaburra and Silver Kangaroo coins.
All 2017 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Shark Privy Coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no indications of wear and tear, but you may notice minor production flaws. These are typically restricted to breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
On the reverse of the Australian Silver Kookaburra Shark Privy Coin you’ll notice the unique 2017 design for the coins. Perched atop the planks of a wooden fence, an adult kookaburra and a younger chick rest with wings at their sides. A Shark Privy features in the upper-right field of the coin’s design.
The Shark Privy is a limited-issue addition to the 2017 Silver Kookaburra Coin. Unlike any other nation in the world, Australia is closely associated with sharks. Unfortunately, shark attacks are a big part of that connection. With thousands of miles of coastline and warm Pacific waters meeting the Indian Ocean, sharks naturally gravitate to Australia’s shores. A 2018 study even found some 5,500 sharks lurk in the waters off eastern Australia alone!
2017 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Shark Privy Coins have the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. This is the fourth-generation design for British and commonwealth coinage, and it was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
