While the kookaburra is a species within the kingfisher family, it happens to consist of four distinct subspecies of its own in Australia, New Guinea, and the Aru Islands. Among those three locations, Australia is the only one to have all four subspecies present. The Rufous-bellied kookaburra is found in lowland New Guinea, Saibai Island, and Australia. The spangled kookaburra is found in all three native habitats, and the blue-winged kookaburra is native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea.
The laughing kookaburra is the species featured on the 2017 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra coin, and the subspecies is known for its characteristic vocalizations that are unique among birds. Some say the sounds mimic human laughter when heard from a distance. The laughing kookaburra is found only in Australia, where it is native in the east and has been introduced in the southwest.
