Technically speaking, the Australian Gold Nugget coin is the longest-running modern bullion series from the Perth Mint. Introduced in 1986, these coins originally used a new image of gold nuggets each year as a promotion of Western Australia’s gold reserves. However, the 1990 introduction of the Silver Kookaburra was the first of a wildlife-themed coin. That same year, the Australian Gold Nugget was switched, its motif now featuring the kangaroo instead.
Kookaburras are a terrestrial species of tree kingfishers found throughout Australia and New Guinea, and on the Australian continent, they are synonymous with the vast, open expanses of the Australian Outback. The kookaburra is noted for its call which eerily mimics the sound of human laughter.
On the reverse of the 2017 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is the image of a wooden fence line that features two kookaburras sitting on it. To the left is a larger adult kookaburra, while a younger chick is featured along the right-hand side of the fence.
The obverse of the Australian Silver Kookaburra features a portrait of Her Majesty, Elizabeth II. The Queen’s portrait is found on all Australian coinage, with this fourth-generation design originating from the Royal Mint in England. Ian Rank-Broadley designed this effigy in 1998.
Your 2017 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin purchased here today is in near-perfect condition from the NGC. Coins with Mint State 69 certification showcase full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Limited to the areas outside the primary focal points, these flaws are minuscule in nature and include potential hairlines or contact marks.
