Like its counterparts around the globe, the American Eagle Series of bullion coins from the United States Mint is available on an annual basis in a variety of metals. The youngest member of the collection is the American Platinum Eagle Coin, which debuted in 1997 with a proof and bullion version. Right now, the 2017 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coin is available to purchase from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
- Arrives in a protective plastic flip, mint tubes of 20, or Monster Boxes of 100 coins!
- 3rd release of the bullion coin since reintroduction! Limited supplies available!
- Contains 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum in BU condition.
- Bears a face value of $100 (USD) backed by the federal government.
- Eagle Soaring Above America design on the reverse.
- Lady Liberty’s face on the obverse.
The American Platinum Eagle Coin was introduced in 1997, but has had a rough production life in the modern era. The bullion version was regularly struck through 2008, but a bullion precious metal shortage and intense demand for silver and gold coins pushed the American Platinum Eagle Coin to the backburner until 2015.
As with the other coins in the American Eagle Series, the American Platinum Eagle Coin features an image of Lady Liberty on one side and the American bald eagle on the other. Rather than historic coin designs though, these 2017 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins feature modern interpretations from former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti on the obverse and US Mint Engraver Thomas D. Rogers Sr. on the reverse.
The obverse of the American Platinum Eagle Coin features a close up image of the head of the Statue of Liberty as she gazes off into the distance, and includes engravings of the word “Liberty,” the national motto of “In God We Trust,” and the phrase “E Pluribus Unum.” The year of issue is also struck on this side.
On the reverse of the 2017 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coin you’ll find Rogers’ bald eagle design. It depicts the American bald eagle in flight over the nation as the sun rises in the background behind it.
These images appear on the obverse and reverse of the American Platinum Eagle Coin annually, without change, while the proof version of the coin has a new reverse every year. That makes it the only major bullion coin from the US Mint to do so.
All 2017 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws including breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks from the coining process.
