Introduced by the United States Mint in 1997, the American Platinum Eagle joined the American Eagle Series as the official platinum bullion coin of the nation. Available in bullion and proof versions, the use of rotating designs on the reverse of the proof coins makes the American Platinum Eagle the only bullion coin from the US Mint with new designs used annually. Right now, 2017 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

Each 2017 1 oz American Platinum Eagle available to you for purchase today is a near-perfect specimen according to the NGC. Coins with a Mint State 69 certification exhibit full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines, and limited in scope to the areas outside the primary focal points of the coin.
American Platinum Eagles debuted in 1997 and celebrated the 20th-anniversary milestone in 2017, but the production history of the coins has been erratic. Originally available annually from 1997 to 2008 in four weights, with fractional weights accompanying these 1 oz platinum coins, the Platinum Eagle was not struck between 2008 and 2013.
In 2014 the US Mint reintroduced the bullion American Platinum Eagle coins, only to suspend them again in 2015. Since 2016, the coins have been back in regular production with modest mintage figures.
On the obverse of all American Platinum Eagle Coins is the design of the Statue of Liberty’s face. Lady Liberty as captured here was created by John Mercanti, former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, and is known as “Liberty looking into the future.”
The reverse of the 2017 1 oz American Platinum Eagle features the same design in use on the reverse since 1997. Thomas D. Rogers, a former engraver and artist with the US Mint, developed this design known as “Eagle soaring above America.” It depicts an eagle in flight with wings at maximum spread as it soars over continent while the sun rises in the background.
