The American Gold Eagle coin debuted from the United States Mint in 1986. The coins were originally available in all four weights in bullion, and just the 1 oz weight in proof. Fractional-weight coins debuted in proof in 1987 and 1988, with the burnished version introduced in all four weights in 2006 on the 20th anniversary of the series.
On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ image of Liberty. Created in 1907, it was originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle through 1933. The final issue of those coins have become so rare, that one recently sold for nearly $9 million.
The reverse of the American Gold Eagle bears a design of the American bald eagle from sculptor and artist Miley Busiek. Her creation includes a male bald eagle flying over the nest, where a group of hatchlings rests under the attentive eye of a female eagle.
All American Gold Eagle coins are currently produced by the West Point Mint. One of the four US Mint facilities, the West Point Mint handles not only production of the American Gold Eagle, but also its popular American Silver Eagle counterpart.
