Coins with this grade have full, original luster from the mint, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These are often limited to miniscule contact marks or hairlines, and are located only outside the primary focal areas of the coin’s surface.
As a First Strike coin, these American Gold Eagle coins are special. Each one had to arrive at the PCGS depository or an approved outside depository within the first 24 hours of the release date set by the United States Mint.
On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin is Lady Liberty, featured in full-length figure with her hair flowing in the breeze as she strides forward from Washington D.C. to lead a young nation into an unknown future. This was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 and featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933.
The reverse of all 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins features the image of a family of nesting bald eagles. Created by Miley Busiek, this design includes a male bald eagle returning to the nest with an olive branch, where a group of hatchlings is closely guarded by a vigilant female bald eagle. This design was created specifically for the American Gold Eagle collection in 1986.
All American Gold Eagle coins are now produced at the West Point Mint facility, which is also in charge of production for the popular American Silver Eagle and the American Gold Buffalo coin.
