The koala is one of the most beloved marsupial species on the Australian continent, surpassed perhaps only by the kangaroo. Often referred to as koala bears, the animals are actually marsupial species similar to the kangaroo and wallaby, and spend the vast majority of their days lounging around and napping.
Since the first release in 2007, the Australian Silver Koala coin has proven a stable commodity for the Perth Mint. With a new design on the reverse each year, collectors and investors alike covet the Australian Silver Koala as part of their personal portfolios for collection or investment. 2017 offers a brand-new design, while giving people a chance to look back on a decade of success!
Each of these 10th anniversary 2017 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala coins is available in BU condition. Coins in BU condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the coining process.
On the obverse of the 2017 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty features on the obverse of all Australian coinage, and her effigy has been on Australian coins since 1952. The most recent one in use on Australian currency, this is a 1998 right-profile portrait from Ian Rank-Broadley.
The reverse of the 2017 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala coin includes the brand-new koala design for this year. It depicts the beloved marsupial sitting at the base of a eucalyptus tree on the Outback, with engravings of the coin name above the design field and its year of issue, weight, purity, and metal content below.
Perth Mint is the oldest operating facility in Australia. Originally opened by the British Royal Mint as its third and final facility in 1899, today it is the only remaining former British Royal Mint location and the only facility other than the Australian government’s Royal Australian Mint.
