Co-directed by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney, The Gallopin’ Gaucho was a playful parody of the Douglas Fairbanks film The Gaucho, which was released to theaters in November of 1927. The film takes place in the Pampas of Argentina, and the storyline of Disney’s The Gallopin’ Gaucho carefully follows that of Fairbanks’ film, with Mickey in the title role.
The Gallopin’ Gaucho was just the second film released featuring Mickey Mouse. Mickey and his girlfriend Minnie debuted together in Plane Crazy in March 1928, and the release of The Gallopin’ Gaucho was a collaborative effort from Iwerks and Disney. The latter in charge of all animation, while Disney produced the film and voiced Minnie for the last time.
