Mexican Silver Libertad coins feature historic imagery that is relevant the nation’s ancient past and symbolic of its struggle for freedom from Spanish rule in the 19th century. The twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are visible in the background of the obverse, and bear the names of ancient Aztec lovers. Legend says Iztaccihuatl died of grief believing that Popocatepetl had died in battle, when in reality he was still alive.
Each 2017 ¼ oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins in this product listing is in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, though you might notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the production process at the mint.
On the obverse of the coin is that image of Winged Victory, as featured on the Mexican Independence Victory Column. This depiction of Victoria in Mexican culture arose from the war of independence, but first featured on the gold Centenario coin released by the Mexican Mint in 1921.
The reverse side of the 2017 ¼ oz Mexican Silver Libertad features the modern-day coat of arms for the nation. Other, larger, coins in the Mexican Silver Libertad series feature a circle of 10 historic coat of arms designs. Given the smaller surface area, these ¼ oz. coins do not have the other versions of the symbol.
The Mexican Mint is the oldest operating mint facility in the Western Hemisphere. It was originally founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors. At one point in time, the Mexican Mint struck coinage for all Spanish territories throughout the Western world.
