Queen Elizabeth II entered Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953 for her official coronation ceremony as the next Queen of England. Adorning the entrance were 10 heraldic beasts that represented her personal heritage and lineage; each one symbolizing an ancestor who had come to the throne before her.
The Queen’s Beast Series features designs of the 10 heraldic beasts from that day created by Jody Clark. The work of Clark reflects the actual statues there that day. Each one was six-feet tall and sculpted by James Woodford RA.
Third in the Queen’s Beast Series is the Red Dragon of Wales. Dragons have long had a role in the mythological history of Britain. To the people of Europe, the dragon was a beast to be feared for its strength and power, but also regarded as wise. The first mentions of the dragon in Wales appear as early as the 6th century and it is said to be the property of Cadwallader, the legendary king of Gwynedd.
On the reverse of the 2017 ¼ oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Dragon Coin is the depiction of the Red Dragon of Wales. The dragon as depicted here was claimed by Owen Tudor, whose claim to Welsh heritage was carried on by his son, the eventual King Henry VII.
The obverse of the Gold Queen’s Beast Series coins depicts Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth-generation portrait which captures her at the age of 89. It was created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint.
2017 ¼ oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Dragon Coins available here are perfect specimens. Each one earned a Mint State 70 grade from the NGC, indicating the coins have full, original mint luster and lack any signs of detracting flaws.
